Mexico native population

Mexico is home to 68 Indigenous Peoples, each with its distinct native language, totaling 364 different variants. As per the 2020 Census, 6.1% of the population aged over three spoke an Indigenous language, comprising around 7.36 million individuals. This percentage was slightly lower than the 2010 Census figure of 6.6%. The 2020 Census also revealed that 11.8 million people resided in Indigenous households, with 5.7 million being men and 6.1 million women.

Concerning Indigenous languages, Nahuatl remains the most widely spoken, representing 22.5% of Indigenous language speakers (approximately 1.65 million people), followed by Mayan with 774,000 speakers (10.6%). Additionally, 2.0% of the national population identified as belonging to an Afro-descendant people, with 7.4% confirming their proficiency in an Indigenous language.

It's essential to note that under-reporting of the Indigenous population may have occurred due to the early suspension of census data collection amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides census data, the National Institute of Indigenous Languages estimates that 25 million people identify as part of an Indigenous people.

The Indigenous population in Mexico faces challenges like marginalization, discrimination, violence, land grabbing, and limited access to adequate housing and public health services. These factors have made them particularly vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic. In response, Indigenous communities have taken the initiative to create and implement their own methods and protocols to combat COVID-19. This includes using community communication channels to disseminate information in their native languages, restricting movement to and from their territories, and fostering a stronger sense of solidarity and community, among other measures.

Black population in Mexico

For the first time in Mexico's independent history, the 2020 census conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) included data on the population that identifies as Afro-Mexican, Afro-descendant, or Black. As of 2020, the Afro-descendant population, recognized as the third cultural root in the country, numbered 2,576,213 individuals. This indicates that, on average, two out of every 100 people in Mexico are considered Afro-descendants, reflecting their rich history, culture, and traditions.

Constituting 2% of the total population, the Afro-Mexican community is fairly evenly distributed by gender, with 50.4% being women (1,297,617) and 49.6% men (1,278,596). In 2020, slightly over half of the Afro-Mexican population resides in six states: Guerrero (303,923), Mexico State (296,264), Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (215,435), Oaxaca (194,474), Mexico City (186,914), and Jalisco (139,676). This demographic insight provides a comprehensive understanding of the Afro-Mexican presence and its distribution across various regions of the country.
